The OCTEON Fusion platform from Cavium has been deployed by Korean mobile service provider, SK Telecom to power its 4G/LTE (News - Alert) small cell deployment. Both the companies are reportedly extending their partnership from initial development phase into broad mass market deployment. “Cavium’s Fusion processor platform provides a market-leading LTE small cell solution with proven carrier grade capabilities for large multiuser small cells. We look forward to aggressively expanding both our subscriber base and our high bandwidth data services with the roll out of cost-effective, feature-rich small cell solutions based on the OCTEON Fusion platform”, said Kang Jong-Ryeol, head of Network Technology R&D Center of SK Telecom (News - Alert), in a press release. Cavium explained that its OCTEON Fusion platform is a powerful, small cell “Base Station-on-a-chip” solution that is specifically designed for LTE & 3G multi-mode small cell base stations, including picocell and micro base stations. The platform merges the features of the company’s multi-core architecture along with purpose-built baseband DSP cores, extensive LTE/3G hardware accelerators and digital front end (DFE) features into a single chip, slashing the BOM cost and power envelope of small cell base stations. Cavium added that it is pleased that SK Telecom has chosen its OCTEON Fusion platform for the mass deployment of small cell LTE infrastructure. End to End interoperability (IOT) is critical for service provider deployments, and its focus on this area along with the company’s strategic partner CS Corporation is enabling the quick acceptance of its small cell solution by carriers and OEMs. SK Telecom hopes to utilize OCTEON Fusion to cope with the surge in mobile data traffic caused by the rapid adoption of smartphones, tablets and media rich wireless devices, coupled with social networking, IP video and internet applications. Recently, Taiwan's Institute for Information Industry (News - Alert) (III) selected Cavium OCTEON Fusion as Platform SoC and Kontron announced support for Cavium OCTEON III multicore MIPS64.
